Habermeyer, Prof. Dr. med. Peter

Specialist for surgery, trauma surgery, orthopaedics and sports medicine

Until the early 1980s, the shoulder joint was a “blind spot” in the range of orthopaedic therapies in Germany. Neither were there specific centres nor textbooks on shoulder surgery. Since 1982, I have attended to the shoulder joint in a scientific and clinical manner, and in 1984, I opened the first German specific outpatient ward for shoulder surgery at the Surgical University Clinic Munich. In 1986, I started to perform both shoulder arthroscopy and shoulder prosthetics. In 1990, my first textbook on shoulder surgery was published, which, in its 4th edition and with more than 12,000 copies sold, represents the standard textbook in the German-speaking area today. With more than 20,000 shoulder surgeries, of which 2,000 have been shoulder prostheses, I have gained comprehensive surgical experience, which is supported by 84 scientific publications. The central motto of my activities is:
“Strict determination of indications leads to surgical success.”

Current ranking of the FOCUS List of Physicians of 14/06/2010*: The Practice for Shoulder Surgery at the ATOS Clinic Heidelberg is the only medical practice in Germany where all physicians have been recommended by the FOCUS list. Selected specialists for shoulder surgery are Prof. Habermeyer, Prof. Loew, and Dr. Lichtenberg.
Apart from the Practice for Shoulder Surgery, four further specialists of the ATOS Clinic have been recommended by the FOCUS list – thus the ATOS Clinics count among the most highly recommended German clinics.
